A hacker group sent out a piece of ransomware called Wannacry (aka Wanna, Wannacrypt, Wcry) which held the infected computer’s systems and all off its files hostage. One of the organizations hit the hardest was the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, who were completely locked out of their phone lines and IT systems.
After all the buzz from Friday’s attacks, you may be thinking that the threat is over, but ransomware attacks are still very possible. The code responsible for this attack is now available for other hackers to see and reuse. We must be prepared for copycats to adapt the code and attempt a future attack.
Our team at West Networks takes a proactive approach in the event of a ransomware attack or server failure. With virtual server hosting, regular application snapshots provide backups and security in the event that a server is compromised. These 24 hour snapshots give our clients the ability to get their company back up and running with minimal downtime and/or data loss.
We recommend and use Sophos Security software because it gives us the ability to specialize in zero-day attack identification and elimination of suspected files from both endpoints and servers.
